Before & After: Inside an Award-Winning Master Bathroom Remodel

A couple moving from the Black Hills of South Dakota to the heart of Denver recently asked me to give their dark, dated loft a metropolitan makeover. The original loft was weighed down with heavy, dated materials that didn’t suit their new city lifestyle, so I outfitted the entire home with modern finishes and a calming color palette that would complement their collection of rustic- and Steampunk-inspired accessories.

One of the project's most dramatic overhauls was the master bath, which took home the 2018 ASID Colorado Crystal Award for Best Bathroom Remodel.

Watch the transformation come to life below.

The original bathroom had a disjointed and cramped layout, and the beige color palette with mosaic tile felt dull and dated. I worked with AI Studios, Collin’s Construction and Christopher’s Plumbing to reconfigure the space so that it would accommodate two people more effectively, and opted for fresh, neutral colors, fixtures and finishes for a spa-like feel.

We opened up the layout by eliminating an awkward partial wall which made the shower area seem dark. New custom-designed vanities with lighted pull channels and oversized drawers were added for extra light and maximum storage space. My favorite design element in this remodel is the monolithic large-format tile from AI Studio, which tricks the eye by making the low ceilings appear higher.

One of the unexpected obstacles from this remodel was the structural plumbing pipes that couldn’t be removed. So, we dressed them up by encasing them with frosted glass used for the shower wall. I love that they act as a design feature now, and add more light to the space.

Since the drain couldn’t be relocated, finding a space for a new soaker tub was the biggest challenge of this project. We circumnavigated the issue by running the drain line along the existing subfloor and building a platform that positions the tub on a pedestal in an ideal location. After the remodel was finished, the client sent me a note that said how happy his wife was that we found the room for her tub. Anything for a good soak!
